Role of IT Strategy

Consists of principles and tactics to reach an organization's goal or objective. IT strategy sets future direction for IT function in an organization. IT strategy involves setting goals, determining the actions to achieve those goals, and preparing resources to execute the actions.

Guidelines

  • IT mission - Aligns with corporate mission, which highlight some cultural points important to the organization. 

  • Communication - communicate among the organization's leaders and management to develop a effective IT strategy plan. The mission and vision of an organization should be clearly communicated.

  • Identify business capabilities that will still be effective the next five years.

  • Assess the gap - Evaluate the difference between where the organization is now and where they want to be. The gap analysis determine what an organization should do to achieve a particular goal by looking at the time frame and other factors.

  • Align IT strategy to make sure the business strategy are aligned to business.

Tools and Best Practices

  • Balanced scorecard - Turns strategy into action to achieve goals with a performance measurement system. Measure and monitor progress towards the organization's objective or goal. 

  • CoBIT - Presents activities in a manageable and logical structure. It focuses more on control and less on execution. This will optimize IT-enabled investments, ensure service delivery and provide a solution when things go wrong.

  • SWOT - This framework identify and analyzes the internal and external factors that can have a negative impact on an organization. It helps understand the strengths and weaknesses of the business.
